Dwta: Fairytale of Bicolano Pride

Writer: The New HueThe New Hue

Manila, Philippines — In the heart of the Philippine music scene, Dwta stands out as a fresh voice, weaving her Bicolana roots into the tapestry of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). Her unique sound and heartfelt lyrics resonate not just within her local community but are beginning to capture the attention of a broader audience. In a recent interview, she shared her journey, the significance of her heritage, and her vision for the future of regional languages in music.

The Influence of Bicolana Roots

For Dwta, being a Bicolana is more than just a label; it’s the essence of her artistry. “Siguro dahil lumaki ako sa Bicol, napapalibutan ako ng rich culture ng Bicol, yung traditions, at syempre, yung Bicol yung language na kinalakihan ko,” she explains. Growing up surrounded by this rich culture, she feels a deep connection to her roots. “Kaya gusto kong i-incorporate siya sa sound, sa music ko.” Initially, her music was a personal endeavor, a way to express herself in a space that felt intimate and familiar. However, as her music began to resonate with others, she adapted, blending love songs with progressive themes, all while staying true to her origins.

Breaking Language Barriers

One remarkable aspect of Dwta's music is her use of the Bicolana language, which is not commonly heard in mainstream Filipino music. “By using my local language, hindi ko naman talaga siya pinipilit, parang natural na lang talaga siyang in-accept,” she asserts. This choice, she states, was not forced but rather a natural expression of her identity. “My goal was simply to release music and express my feelings,” she shares. To her surprise, her songs have found appreciation beyond Bicol, reaching listeners from various regions of the Philippines. “Ngayon, hindi na lang mga Bicolano yung nakaka-appreciate ng Bicol songs, kundi pati na rin yung iba’t ibang tao sa ibang lugar.”

Dwta sees a growing appreciation for regional languages within Filipino music. She notes the increasing number of artists embracing their local dialects, reflecting a positive shift in the industry. “Sobrang lumalaki na siya yung pag-appreciate ng tao sa language ng, hindi lang ng Bicol, kundi ng iba’t ibang lugar dito sa Pilipinas.”

Envisioning the Future of OPM

Looking ahead, Dwta envisions a future where regional languages, including Bicolano, are celebrated on both local and international stages. “Siguro, kapag na-envision ko siya, kapag may mga international movies, maririnig mo yung may mga Bicol song doon,” she dreams. She wants to showcase the richness of Filipino culture globally. “Gusto ko mangyari yung impact na mangyari sa OPM na hindi lang Tagalog, kundi pati na rin ng Bisaya, Bicol.”

The Journey from Local Talent to National Recognition

Dwta's journey has not been without challenges. Transitioning from a local Bicolana talent to a recognized figure in the wider music industry meant facing discrimination and skepticism. “Discrimination. Siguro dahil isa rin akong probinsyana,” she reflects. She recalls moments of feeling marginalized, especially in a competitive landscape dominated by major artists. Yet, she turned these challenges into strengths, embracing her unique identity as a Bicolana artist.

One pivotal moment for her was performing her song “Santigwar” at a rally, where the crowd sang along, affirming her place in the music scene. “Parang, oh my God, yun lang. Grabe, na-appreciate nalaga nila yung Bicol song na yun.” It was a goosebumps moment, she recalls, realizing that her music truly resonated with people. Winning the Awit Awards for her song "Padaba Taka" further solidified her belief in the power of her roots.

Legacy and Impact

As a Bicolana artist, Dwta aspires to leave a legacy that transcends music. “Gusto ko lang maalala nila ako as the Diwata who breaks barriers,” she says. She wants to be remembered not just for her songs but as a fairy-like figure who empowers other local artists to embrace their true selves. “Gusto kong i-promote yung culture natin, yung tradition, yung Pilipinas, at buong mundo.”

Dwta's journey is a testament to the power of authenticity in music. By celebrating her Bicolana roots, she not only enriches her own artistry but also paves the way for others to follow. In a world that often seeks to homogenize, her music serves as a vibrant reminder of the beauty found in diversity.
