Filipino singer, songwriter, and producer Fern. is rooting himself in the nostalgia of R&B in his latest release, AkoNaSana, out now on all music streaming platforms.
Cheekily described by the artist as a sexy love song, AkoNaSana is a smooth, atmospheric song about someone’s hope that his desire is reciprocated.
“It’s a song about expressing feelings of wanting someone to think about you as much as you think about them,” says Fern. about the song. “You hope that the other person is also thinking about you in that way.”
Eagle-eyed fans may find AkoNaSana familiar, and that’s because the track was teased by Fern. at the post-credits scene of the SO FLY official music video.
“Ano ang iyong nadarama, kung ang nasa isip mo ako na sana. Kaya bang paikutin lang, tayo lang ang nakakaalam,” listeners can hear in the sneak peek, which encapsulates the song’s theme. A line is then constantly repeated in the song (“Ano ang iyong nadarama”), amplifying Fern.’s pining and hope that the object of his affection will return his feelings. He writes the song as if he’s talking to his potential lover, using flirty lines reminiscent of R&B songs from the 2000s.
“Oh baby, ‘di lang tayo pansamantala,” Fern. offers his never-ending commitment right at the first verse of the song. “Oh baby, paano nga ba aminin ‘to,” he continues, revealing that he’s still building the courage to confess in the second verse. “Dito ka lang sa akin girl, walang iba,” he promises his fidelity as the song progresses. He even plays with language as he offers his love, crooning, “Girl, you know I ain’t frontin’. ‘Sayo ‘di na lumalayo habang lumalim ang pag ibig ko sa ‘yo, baby.”
Like his previous release, SO FLY and Baby Blue, AkoNaSana is rooted in soul R&B. Fern. confirms this, as he cites D’angelo, Daniel Caesar, and Frank Ocean as his primary influences for producing the song.
“But it’s also inspired by a mix of different music genres, a melting pot of everything I listen to and the way I perceive music,” Fern. expounds.
As a go-to producer of popular local artists, Fern. is no stranger to being struck by inspiration at random times, andAkoNaSana is an example of this.
“For this song, I really just let go. I just let the music come out,” he shares. “I started with the beat while we were on a team outing for KINDRED. We were in a nice house with a pool, and it was just the perfect setting to lay an idea down on my laptop. The idea turned out to be so good that when I got home, I instantly arranged the idea and recorded it the next week.”
“I’m going to really be showing a different side of myself in this era of music,” he promises. “More music and more art are coming soon, too!”
